Each year, around 1,000 youth age out of foster care in Los Angeles, and many subsequently experience homelessness. A new, mixed-methods study from the California Policy Lab shows which youth are at highest risk of homelessness and how predictive analytics could be used to prevent that from happening. The report also inventories transition services and housing programs available to transition-aged youth, and shares insights from former foster youth and staff who work with them about challenges they faced.
Our Foster Youth initiative invests in research and programs to uplift young people’s visions for their futures. We work alongside communities and systems to build more comprehensive support for transition-age foster youth to receive what all young people need to thrive, including housing stability, access to quality mental and behavioral health services, and supports to attain their educational and career goals.
