The Prenatal-to-3 Policy Impact Center at Vanderbilt University conducted a national landscape scan to identify each state’s early childhood governance strategy. They selected states with different governance styles for in-depth case studies.
This brief presents preliminary results for New Mexico, which in 2019 consolidated most early childhood services under the Early Childhood Education and Care Department (ECECD). This restructure, supported by sustainable state funding from natural resource investments, expanded eligibility and access to early childhood programs statewide.
The Early Childhood Governance Landscape is a resource designed to illustrate how governance is organized across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This is an ongoing resource that will continue evolving with additional case studies and future insights into governance typologies.
