We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Pope Francis. His compassion, tenderness and care for those less fortunate brought global attention to the plight of those in need, fostering a spirit of empathy and support among people of all faiths and backgrounds.
Pope Francis placed a great deal of importance on uplifting the dignity of people all over the world through supporting displaced people, protecting children, supporting anti-human trafficking initiatives, and caring for the elderly and others experiencing vulnerability.
As an organization that supports the work of Catholic sisters globally, we are especially grateful for the many ways Pope Francis has lifted the work of the Catholic sisters, who were among the most profound influences on our foundation’s two benefactors, Conrad N. Hilton and his son William Barron Hilton.
His guidance and tireless actions have inspired countless individuals and communities to embrace acts of kindness, charity and inclusivity.
We will never forget the words he imparted to the Foundation, which so poignantly speak to our shared vision for the world:
“Your Foundation has shown how such generosity and commitment can transform the lives of those who find themselves in situations of vulnerability. The service you offer in education, health, refugee assistance and the fight against poverty is a concrete testimony of love and compassion. Do not forget this word: compassion, ‘to suffer with’. God is compassionate; he draws close and suffers with us. Compassion is not throwing money into the hands of another without looking them in the eyes. No. Compassion is drawing close and ‘suffering with’. Do not forget the word: compassion.”
Statement from Linda Hilton, Chair of the Board of Directors, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation:
“Pope Francis was an extraordinary man, and on behalf of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Board of Directors we are grateful and honored to have met him. His messages of compassion and tenderness, particularly his call for all people to be attentive to and compassionate towards those living in the periphery, resonates strongly with our work and the vision of our founder, my grandfather Conrad N. Hilton, whose strong Catholic faith inspired him to bequest nearly his entire fortune to the foundation in his name. The Hilton Foundation’s board of directors and staff – – will continue to honor his legacy through our ongoing support of Catholic sisters as they continue to work tirelessly on behalf of those who are experiencing disadvantage throughout the world.”
Statement from Peter Laugharn, President and CEO, Conrad N. Hilton Foundation:
“Pope Francis shared our vision of helping the most vulnerable people in the world. He was a longtime champion of the work of Catholic sisters and recognized the importance of their work and their many contributions towards helping those facing disadvantage. He will be missed, and we join millions of people around the world in remembering and honoring a compassionate, humble and kind man.”
