In honor of World Water Day 2018, we are excited to announce the official launch of Asutifi North District Ahonodie Mpontuo, a collective action initiative that seeks to ensure everyone throughout this district in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana has access to safe and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene services (WASH) by 2030.
This initiative is unique in forging a strategic partnership between the district government, service providers, supporting NGOs and local communities to bring sustainable services to Asutifi North District, where it is currently estimated that only three percent of the population has access to safely managed water while 23 percent has access to basic sanitation.
As the District Assembly states, “Every person in Asutifi North District will have access to sustainable safe water, sanitation and hygiene services in a conducive environment where water resources are sustainably managed.”
The year-long planning process for this launch involved uniting stakeholders under a common vision for WASH in the Asutifi North District and developing a district-wide plan to meet their collective aspirations. The plan serves to guide and coordinate the implementation of creative WASH solutions spanning the next 13 years. This initiative highlights the government’s work to actively localize the sustainable development goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 6, focusing on shared and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
Our Safe Water Strategic Initiative is working to identify and establish proven and promising solutions to the safe water challenge. With the local Asutifi North District government in the driver’s seat, we look forward to this partnership in sharing and mobilizing the knowledge, skills and expertise needed to translate this plan into action.
